History and Development of Yoga
The history and development of yoga is a profound journey that spans thousands of years, evolving from ancient spiritual practices into a globally recognized system for physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Rooted in the ancient civilization of India, yoga is believed to have originated over 5,000 years ago, with its earliest references found in the sacred texts known as the Vedas. These early scriptures mentioned practices of meditation, breath control, and connection with the divine. The evolution of yoga became more structured with the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, which introduced deeper philosophical insights into the purpose of life and the union of the individual soul with the universal consciousness. The most systematic presentation of yoga came through Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, written around 200 BCE, which outlined the eightfold path known as Ashtanga Yoga—a guide for ethical living, mental discipline, and spiritual realization. Over the centuries, yoga diversified into various schools and traditions, such as Hatha Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Karma Yoga, each emphasizing different aspects of the human experience. In the modern era, yoga’s development expanded globally through influential teachers like Swami Vivekananda, T. Krishnamacharya, B.K.S. Iyengar, and Pattabhi Jois, who introduced the practice to the West.
