Activating Windows on an old laptop

Took an old laptop off the shelf for the kids so they could do their homework. Installed a lightweight version of Windows, but there's a problem: the system isn't activated, and Word keeps blocking the printing of essays. Buying a key for a ten-year-old device is absurd. Is there a way to activate the software so it just works and doesn't interfere with the kids' learning?
